Hiking Along the Kiso Valley
October 2008
We started at the little former post town Tsumago. Many of the houses are actually the originals from the Edo period, when the "Kisoji" trade route gained importance and the villages along the valley became to flourish.
Window-shopping the souvenir shops - is the cat for sale, too?
The Kisoji trail leads through the wooded hills, where the leaves are just about to change their colour.
After a 2-hour mostly up-hill walk we arrived at the next village, Magome, where we gained back our strength by trying lots of local treats, most of them based on chesnuts...
...but also a particularly nice soba noodle soup with mushrooms, which I am hungrily awaiting here.
