About this Page
I cannot imagine good lifestyle without good food. For me these two are inseparable companions. Rather than considering it pure nutrition, to me food means the pleasure of taste, enjoying it bit by bit, and there is also an important social element to it. Unless close to literally starving I would actually rather choose not to eat at all than just devouring bad quality or carelessly prepared food; under such circumstances I find eating utterly frustrating. Even if I cook just for myself (although I clearly prefer being in company) I take my time to enjoy it. It does not matter whether we talk about a highly elaborate and sophisticated five-course meal or about a spontaneous creation with simple ingredients: I think it is first of all a lifestyle choice to appreciate good food.
FoodMeetsLifestyle.com is hence all about the joy of cooking and eating. As a passionate, though non-professional, cook I would like to share some of my recipes, ranging from quick every-day cooking to more elaborate cuisine for special occasions. All of them, also the most complicated ones, will be explained and documented in a way that is easily comprehensible for other non-professionals. As I want people to fully enjoy the recipes I post, I will of course mention any particularities or pitfalls I come across when testing them!
Most of the recipes are actually my own inventions, or at least adapted to my taste. Except for some traditional dishes (which I am not very experienced in…) I rarely cook strictly according to existing recipes, but I am often inspired by such (or by things I have been served in a restaurant) to maybe use an ingredient in a certain way or to apply a certain technique.
I would not consider my cuisine to be "typical" for any specific place. In fact they are rather based on a combination of ideas and concepts I have accumulated while living, cooking and eating in different places and with different people – the result being my own personal fusion. I am originally from Austria, but partly grew up in Switzerland; after consecutive stays in the UK, Spain, and France I ended up in Germany for the past few years, living first in Frankfurt, then in Munich, and I very much enjoyed exploring markets, delicatessen shops and restaurants in each place.
Being a somewhat restless person I am now just very excited about my latest big adventure: I decided to take a break from my investment banking job, and am currently spending a year or so in Tokyo. My husband Simon is taking part in an international exchange programme at the firm he is working for, while I am dedicating most of my time to learning Japanese. Japan in general, and Tokyo specificly, is of course an absolute paradise for foodies, with countless options for both dining in and out. The local ingredients, as well as inspirations taken from Japanese restaurants, have added a whole new aspect to my cooking. Back in Germany I was cooking - let's say - essentially European-style dishes with some kind of inventive Asian elements, whereas I have now shifted to mainly Japanese-style dishes with European influence. It still remains my very personal fusion, though!
